Teaching Philosophy

I use a guided, iterative, hands-on approach to help students build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to achieve their educational goals and change their lives. Twice in my lifetime, community college changed my life. The confidence it gave me to embrace my education is a gift I want to give back to my students. I recognize that students come to my courses with different academic backgrounds, technical experience, levels of confidence, and educational goals. I believe equitable teaching means recognizing those differences, reducing unnecessary barriers to learning, and giving students a meaningful opportunity to achieve the student learning outcomes. In practice, I develop coursework that responds to the different ways students learn, emphasizes applied instruction, connects technical knowledge with the broader skills students need to adapt to change, encourages the ethical use of emerging technologies, and makes the course’s objectives and expectations clear.

How Students Learn in My Courses

Each class is unique because of the students in it; therefore, I continuously track and evaluate what learning methods are effective and modify my approach appropriately to achieve the student learning outcomes. This begins with a “get-to-know-you” survey I conduct at the beginning of each semester, and the results have consistently indicated that students’ preferred learning methods are short videos and hands-on lectures. I also believe that students do not all connect with new technical concepts in the same way, so presenting material in different forms gives more students an opportunity to build understanding and confidence. That approach is strongly reflected in my course content materials.

However, I also know that effective teaching means giving students what helps them learn, not only what feels most comfortable at first. I use their feedback as an important guide while also relying on assessment results, course objectives, and my own judgment as an instructor. I strive to create an inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and working through challenging material as they build confidence and become more independent learners. In my programming class, I review the concepts, share the official resources, and then use a student-centered approach to work through examples independently or as a group. I believe students build stronger technical understanding when they actively work with concepts rather than only listening to an explanation. I present this cycle in small time segments to keep students engaged and then iterate back through the concepts at a more complex level to deepen understanding through practice.

The Effectiveness of Applied Instruction

I believe students learn technology best by using it with purpose. This is why applied lab work is a large part of how students demonstrate learning in my courses. Through guided, hands-on instruction, students learn the skills needed to complete lab assignments and demonstrate their understanding. I also recognize that students do not all master technical concepts at the same pace, so I try to balance clear expectations with opportunities for students to continue working toward mastery.

Lab work in my courses is balanced with quizzes and exams that allow students to demonstrate subject mastery in a more structured setting. Because my assessments are open-book, I design many questions to require research, interpretation, and problem solving rather than simple memorization. The ability to locate, evaluate, and apply information is becoming increasingly important in the modern workforce.

Practice-Grounded Learning

As technology changes the daily lives of my students, technical education must develop more than technical skills alone. Students also need critical thinking, clear communication, careful research, ethical judgment, and practical problem-solving skills to adapt to unfamiliar challenges. In my courses, students build foundations in information technology, cybersecurity, and programming while practicing how to apply those skills to real technical problems.

This practice-grounded learning is often reflected in discussions and assignments that consider how technology impacted society five, ten, or 20 years ago and then ask students to consider how today’s technical choices may affect their lives five, ten, or 20 years from now. By looking backward and forward, students can see that technology is a set of decisions, systems, risks, opportunities, and responsibilities that require lifelong learning and ethical judgment.

Ethical Use of Emerging Technologies

Generative artificial intelligence is one example of an emerging technology that students need to understand with both curiosity and caution. I believe students should be familiar with large language models and have a basic understanding of how these systems produce and present information. My students learn to question AI output, consider references and sources, protect their privacy, and use these tools safely and responsibly. I strive to prepare my students to use emerging technologies ethically without surrendering their critical thinking, integrity, or personal voice.

Objectives and Expectations

Giving my students a clear vision of the course’s objectives, expectations, and grading process is part of how I help them prepare for success in my classes. I recognize that students enter higher education with different levels of familiarity with academic expectations, so I work to make the pathway through my courses as clear as possible. Throughout my academic journey, I have always seen the course syllabus as my blueprint for success, and I encourage my students to do the same.

I believe that when students understand what they are being asked to learn, how they are being assessed, and why those skills have broader value, they are better prepared to take responsibility for their progress and make informed decisions about their learning.

Summary

I continue to grow as a college instructor by reflecting on student feedback, assessment results, and my own teaching experiences. Lifelong learning is as important for me as an educator as it is for the students I teach. Yet as my teaching continues to evolve, my core passion remains the same. My mission is to help students embrace their education and change their lives as college did for me. My own academic path, professional background, and commitment to course outcomes all shape how I teach: with clear foundations, applied practice, high expectations, and steady encouragement.

It is a pleasure to teach in person when I can because I enjoy meeting my students, getting to know them, helping them with their lab work, and watching them build technical skills to take on the next challenge in their educational journey. It is my hope that they leave my class as lifelong learners and problem solvers with an eye on the future.
